Security policy expert and Neokohn Senior Fellow Robert C. Castel said on the latest edition of Weeks Originals that the outcome of the Battle of Bakhut will be a good test of the Russians' true intentions.
"If Russia's goal is simply to capture Donbass, then the most logical strategy is to open a 'golden bridge' for the defenders of Bakhut to retreat. So they will allow the Ukrainians to evacuate Bakhmut, and then the Russians will capture this town with little sacrifice, and then we will know that the Russians only wanted Donbass. However, if the Russians' goal is not just to take Donbass, but to crush the entire Ukrainian army, then they will do everything they can to prevent such a golden bridge from being built, and these troops will be captured or killed to the last mouthful." - said Robert C. Castel.
In an interview with the security policy expert, we also discussed, among other things, whether President Zelensky's chair might wobble if events in Ukraine don't turn out the way the Ukrainian leader expects in the spring.
"Like all politicians, President Zelensky is trying to play a balancing game between the different factions. In Ukraine, you have these Western, liberal, progressive circles, but you also have these very, very hard, you could say neo-Nazi, ultra-nationalist circles. Somehow, President Zelensky has to straddle both sides and satisfy both sides. And I think that this war effort can only be sustained if they set themselves such maximalist goals, even if they know that they are not actually achievable. You have to communicate that outwards." - said Robert C. Castel, who added:
"If a general were to suddenly replace Zelensky now, he would leave a bad taste in his mouth. So I think it's very important from a market point of view that he stays and doesn't have to launch a new product in this Western market. And I therefore think it is in the West's first-rate interest that President Zelensky should remain in his position. How possible is that? Well, it is not always possible. There is a limit to how much influence the British or the American or some other political will can have on what happens in Ukraine."
