The counter-attack has been going on for over a week, with few results so far, but that doesn't mean anything. The Russians' aim is primarily military: the complete destruction of the Ukrainian army, which is armed by the West. The continuation of the war is still in the interests of both major geopolitical players, and the outcome of the Ukrainian counter-offensive could be decisive in this respect.
