In this week's podcast series, we asked security expert Robert C. Castel about the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Topics of discussion:
One of the most prominent US generals, David Petraeus, who was also former CIA director, said that following the defeat and withdrawal from Lyman, quote, "Putin's army is falling apart" and that "whatever he does, his defeat is irreversible". Is this part of the propaganda war or has the tide of war really turned?
Last time I said that the partial mobilisation was a last ditch effort to fight this war by Putin's conventional means. Since then, the four occupied provinces have been annexed. Does this represent a new step in the war?
How much of a real threat is Putin's use of limited tactical nuclear weapons to defend the annexed territories?
According to one US analyst, Russia needs to neutralise US satellites before it can deploy nuclear weapons without fear of immediate retaliation. Is Putin capable of such star warfare? After all, this is exactly what his Soviet predecessors failed to do in the 1980s.
In practice, what could such a space attack mean? How do we imagine it? Would it be fired at US networks from the ground or from a Russian satellite?
What are the options for the US Space Force?
Suppose a Russian pre-emptive space strike is successful. Could America have a Plan B? For example, could Elon Musk's satellite network help the US military?
Has conscription on the front line made a difference? I hear they are deploying reservists without training.
Hundreds of thousands of people have already fled the draft to foreign countries by the most diverse routes available, from Finland to the Mongolian border. Could this signal an internal wavering in Putin's support?
Russia and the US blame each other for blowing up the North Sea gas pipelines. Which scenario do you think is more realistic?
There have also been anti-Semitic accusations in the Russian media that Jews in Russia are allegedly not loyal enough to the patriotic war in Ukraine. How do you see this from Israel, could this cause another wave of emigration, for example?
Meanwhile, the Russians have also deployed Iranian drones in the war, and have reportedly targeted Israeli pilgrims travelling to Ukraine for a holiday. Is there any chance of Israel being dragged into this war? Or that Israel is striking at Iran's nuclear programme in the shadow of events in Ukraine?
