October 7: Forensic analysis reveals Hamas abuses and numerous false Israeli claims. The investigation draws up a list of those killed in Hamas attacks, but also finds certain claims repeated by Israeli politicians to be untrue.

The investigative group Al-Jazeera (I-Unit) has produced a forensic analysis of the events of 7 October, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel that transformed Middle East politics.

October 7 exposes the widespread human rights abuses by Hamas fighters and others who followed them across the fence from the Gaza Strip, and provides a comprehensive list of those killed.

However, the I-Unit investigation, which examined hours of CCTV, dashcams, personal phones and head-cam footage of the slain Hamas fighters, also found that many of the stories that emerged in the days following the attack were false.

These include allegations of atrocities such as the mass killing and beheading of babies, and allegations of widespread and systematic rape - stories that have been repeatedly used by Israeli and Western politicians to justify the subsequent brutal bombing of the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed nearly 32,000 people.

"It is impossible to know whether they are gunmen or hostages.

After a thorough analysis of all the available data, I-Unit has concluded that the Israeli army's claim that eight burned babies were found in a house in Kibbutz Be'eri is not true. The analysis concluded that there were no babies in the house and that the 12 people inside were almost certainly killed by Israeli forces when they stormed the building.

This was one of the cases in which the police and army appeared to have killed Israeli citizens. I-Unit has identified 19 such victims, but the actual number is probably higher. It also identified 27 prisoners who died between their homes and the fence in Gaza under as yet unclear circumstances.

Gunnery camera footage from Israeli Apache helicopters shows numerous strikes on vehicles and persons returning to Gaza.

"My concern with this footage is that we can't tell if they are Hamas gunmen or .... hostages. And I don't think the helicopter pilot or the machine gunner can tell either," said Chris Cobb-Smith, a British army veteran and human rights researcher.

The film features an interview with Yossi Landau, commander of Zaka South, a volunteer organisation tasked with collecting bodies after the 7 October violence. The I-Unit confronts Landau with evidence that many of the stories of atrocities that Zaka passed on to the media were highly questionable.

I-Unit also examined allegations of widespread sexual violence on 7 October, concluding that although isolated rapes may have taken place, there was insufficient evidence to support the claim that rape was "widespread and systematic".

"To prove that the rape was widespread and systematic, we would need much more evidence than has come to light and much more corroborating evidence than has been published so far," said Madeleine Rees, Secretary General of the International League of Women for Peace and Freedom.
